Worksheet 8-Gameshow Intros
Listen to the intro to 4 different game shows describing the style, pace, instruments, beginning-middle-end of each track and its impact.
COUNTDOWN
It's starts of with just having the tick of the clock as the monotone until more instruments join in. The tune resembles the passing of time, the pace is quite quick and upbeat which makes it catchy and creates tension. The tune is in time with the ticking of the clock. At the end of the track it softens to only the ticking of the clock. The tune of the intro is also used slightly when the clock is being used throughout the game show, therefore it is very recognisable to the audience.
FAMILY FORTUNES
The into is very upbeat and fast which connects with the genre of the game show as it is for families. One of the instruments used is a bass drum which creates the upbeat 'happy' feeling, the beat also is catchy which makes it recognisable to the audience. Towards the end the audience begin to start clapping with the theme tune. The song plays right through until the host walks on stage and starts to introduce the game.
THE CUBE
At the beginning the voice over starts to explain the rules of the game and the prizes available. This is said over intense music. The music sounds like something being produces by an orchestra. At the end the host introduces the game and the music come to a sudden stop. It the picks back up again when the title of the game show is appearing on the screen. It then ends with the voice over whispering the words 'the cube' The music is very fast and loud to create the tension.
TOTAL WIPEOUT
The host starts to introduce where the course is in this episode and all about the contestants taking part and the obstacles that they will face. They are describing how hard and unique the courses are and what they consist of. Also what the contestants win. The music in the background is very intense with a strong beat. The tune seems very gradual and victorious by using pitch scales. It sounds like something very old that would be used during battles. The voice over with the music makes the intro very recognisable to the audience.

How does the game appeal to young people?
The game show is about children getting their own back on their parents for doing something they think was wrong. E.G embarrassing them. They have to compete against each other is a range of physical activities. For example the kids have to try and do a task but the parents have to try and stop them. This appeals to youngsters because it is very comical and the children of the children can relate to the kids on the show with their parents. The game show isn't very serious so it wouldn't disinterest the children, it is very active and funny to watch, so it keeps the children entertained. They would also like this because they would cheer along for the children to beat their parents. There are also no adverts in between so that the child will not walk away or turn off the chow during the commercials because they are boring.

What are the prizes?
The child that gets the most points combined throughout the game show get to have their parenmt dunked in the gunk, they have to answer questions and if they get the answer wrong they are lifted higher from the dunk tank so they have to fall from a higher height. They also get their own clock of the show and their own jacket as well. The other child and their parent get to take home a souvenir photo of them on the show and a "get your back jacket".

Are there any similarities between children's game shows and adults?
A lot of adult game shows are also very physical based and they both have to complete a variety of tasks to win. In both adult and children game shows they normally have a final round at the end which is where they decide how much or what they have won for themselves. For example in Total Wipe-out have 3 rounds that the contestants have to face before coming to the final where only 3 contestants compete for the fastest time. In get your own back, they have to compete a series of challenges before getting to dunk their parent in the finale.

What are the differences?
Adult game shows can be very serious such as answering questions at a panel. This could be shows such as countdown or a question of sport. They can also be repetitive in the challenges that the contestants face, Such at total wipe-out, therefore children can get very inattentive with the show. On the other hand children's game shows are lively and there is always something happening, if they were to have dull moments the child would become uninterested. This is also why children's shows don't tend to have adverts because the children can get bored during them.

GAME SHOWS HOMEWORK
Why do people want to appear on game shows?
People want to appear on game shows because they may have the chance to win a sum of money that could mean a lot to them. This could help them out with any problems that they have or just reward themselves and their family with a holiday or something of luxury. People also apply because they want to appear on TV and be seen by their friends and family. Sometimes a whole family appears on a game show, this may be because they want to have some bonding time together or just to have some fun. If the contestant is a celebrity they may be competing to win money for a charity of their choice.

How are these prizes funded?
Cash prizes are paid by the show, and the money comes from the producers, who are paid by the advertisers/network
There can be a couple of "safeguards" that make this a little easier for the shows. They can have an insurance policy to protect them from huge losses. For example, the insurance company says, we've studied the odds of your game, and we'll sell you a policy for $200,000 up front, that pays out full prize money any time someone wins $100,000 or more during this season of the show. Smart insurance company’s study the gameplay and sort out the odds of how many players will win big.
For really big prizes ($1,000,000), shows may pay similar to a lottery, where the money is in a fund that pays over x years, or the winner can take a reduced lump sum immediately. For example, if you win $1 mil on a show, they might tell you (after the show is done taping) "okay! we can give you $50,000 a year for the next 20 years, or we can pay you $450,000 lump-sum right now and that's all you get."
Product prizes show sponsors typically donate those in exchange for exposure. That's why whenever it's a new car (or vacation package, or furniture set, or whatever), they spend a while talking about the features of the prize and then say "donated by...." That's TV advertising for the sponsor, in exchange for the prize.
Three most common ways of funding:- sponsorships
- adverts/commercials
- contestants fee
The producers what someone who is outgoing and interesting to watch on television. They also have to be skilled and confidents whilst on air. The producers will look for someone who is natural and themselves whilst filming. The producers will judge people depending on what the audience will like and appeal to.
Questions that may be asked:
How old are you?
Have you ever appeared on a game show?
What are your talents/weaknesses?
Why are you auditioning?
Why would you like to win?
